Most famously, she is known for playing Tiana Disney's first princess of African descent in The Princess and the Frog (2009). Disney Legend was bestowed upon her in the year 2011. She was also recognized by her part in Dreamgirls (2006), which earned the Academy Award for Best Picture. In the Starz show Power she played the role of LaVerne Jukebox Ganner. She has also been recognized by her stage performances which include her lead roles in Caroline or Change (2004) on Broadway in which the Tony Award was won for Best actor in the Musical.
